What are Eucalyptus Sheets Made Of?

Eucalyptus sheets are made from Tencel® Lyocell. Lyocell is a form of rayon that consists of cellulose fiber made from bleached wood pulp of a eucalyptus tree.

The pulp from the tree is broken down into a sludge, then it’s pressed out into thin strands, spun, and dyed.

Although the Lyocell is a remarkably eco-friendly material, it’s worth noting that the chemicals used during processing can be too harsh for people with severe skin sensitivities.

One of the first advantages of eucalyptus bed sheets is the natural antibacterial and antimicrobial properties of the eucalyptus. Because of this, dust mites are minimized.

This was proven by a formal test performed by the American Society for Testing and Materials. Besides this important health benefit, eucalyptus sheets are deliciously comfortable.

Unlike cotton sheets, which get damp and clingy, they breathe and evaporate moisture so you can have sweet dreams all night long.

Things to Consider Before Buying Eucalyptus Sheets

Thread count. Keep in mind that thread count isn’t the determining factor when it comes to sheet quality. The main issue is the quality of the fibers.

At the same time, however, it does make a significant difference. The higher the thread count, the higher the quality of the fabric.

Durability. You know those little fuzzy balls that appear on your sheets after many washings?

You don’t want to spend hours shaving your sheets to get rid of those. Choose sheets with high durability for longevity and continued comfort.

Comfort. How do the sheets feel when you sleep on them? Are they comfortable?

Do they make you sleep better? Pick sheets that feel nice to you.

Source. Find out where the material came from. The location of the manufacturer matters. Often, sheets made in the U.S.A. are higher quality. However, the source of the material also matters.

Different locations produce different qualities, and the ethicality and sustainability of the material can vary from place to place.

Shrinkage Control. Is the shrinkage controlled by an organic element, or a chemical?

Maybe this isn’t important to you for health reasons, but the impact on the environment matters.

Makeup. Is it 100% Tencel® Lyocell, or is it Tencel mixed with cotton?

You might assume that pure Tencel sheets are superior, but consumers don’t necessarily back up that assumption.

One consumer commented in an online Bed, Bath, and Beyond review that she found a Lyocell/Cotton blend much more comfortable than pure Lyocell.

The blended sheets also retained their new feel for far more washes.

If you need something you can throw in with any old load, then you should look elsewhere.

The sheets are fantastically soft, wonderfully absorbent, and are a favorite of people with allergies and sensitivities.

They’re also somewhat high maintenance, so you’ll need to decide if the comfort is worth it for your needs.

Verdict:These are a good purchase for the price, but it’s true that you get what you pay for. If you want Lyocell that stays nice for a long time, you’ll have to buy the more expensive version.

If you crave the comfort of Lyocell and can deal with a few seam-patching jobs here and there and a needy care regimen, then this is a good deal for nice sheets.
